And finally, a well earned shower... <3

And finally, a well earned shower… ❤

Today the Grand Prix classes CDI are the freestyles. CDI rules are that you can only enter two tests, the Grand Prix and either the Freestyle or the Grand Prix Special. We have opted for the Grand Prix Special at this CDI and it is scheduled tomorrow. So today Lance will have a light school in the morning, when it’s cooler and a hand walk later in the day.

Tomorrow’s Grand Prix Special will be in the morning so that will definitely be easier on Lance, weather wise.

A big congrats to Emma Weinert O’Rourke and Zindans…first place ribbon (74%) in the PSG. Another big congrats to Ehren Volk on her first place ribbon on Magic in Young Riders!! Wonderful rides!! Congrats coach Shannon!!! Well done team!!

Ivars got a good ride in on his bike on Griffon Park hills and will be back in the saddle this morning.

Off to find some tea…

Day off, day off, day off!!!

We had a great day of schooling yesterday (I know, I say that about everyday but it’s the truth!!!!). The amount of learning each day amazes me. Thank you, thank you Shannon! And thank you Lindsey for so expertly applying the concepts daily. And thank you Lance, William and Fred for “getting it!”

We had a great visit with Sherry and Jenny yesterday…more Canadians at Arroyo!!! They’ve headed back to Thermal for the Grand Prix (Jumping) on Sunday.

This is an unusual day for us…we’re getting a late start!! Peter very quietly snuck out of the house at 4 am (he had a early flight home). Ivars has finished his last lecture in the series on anaesthesia he brought with him (Cali laughed when I told her Papa had homework this week!!) and Lindsey has gone to the gym and then is off to Arroyo to do Saturday chores with the horses.

This is Ivars’ last day here this week and he and I are in the planning stages of “what shall we do today??!!!”. The forecast is 30C here at the beach and much warmer inland. Nice sunny weather and will be crowds and crowds of people out and about!!! Maybe we’ll just hang out around the pool…or maybe we’ll hop on the Vespa and head off into the sunshiney day!!! Yeah!

Off to a wonderful day off in San Diego…!!!

Learning, always learning something

I don’t think I’ve ever attended a dressage clinic where I didn’t learn something.  Some clinics I learned quite a bit, some not so much.  This clinic…I learned a lot and now my brain is very, very tired.

Shannon Peters was here this weekend.  And now my brain is so filled with concepts and exercises and solutions.  Though now thinking about it…this is quite reministic of a normal day at Arroyo Del Mar from the last 4 winters!

So many thank yous…to Linda and Isabella (the best barn staff in the world!!), to Greg and Peter and Barb (for managing the very difficult lunch logistics at the house), to The Good Oven Bakery (for all the gluten-free goodies), to Ivars (even though he wasn’t home, he put together so many details before he left, he made my life so easy this weekend!), to all the auditors (for being so patient about the long walk from the parking paddock and the one busy bathroom in the barn!!!), to Lindsey for the expert rides (especially the 3 back to back rides starting at 6am Sunday morning!!), to Casey and Deanna and Cheryl and Kim (for letting us watch and learn as they applied new ideas and techniques to each ride) and to Shannon…thank you, thank you, thank you…for being so generous and patient to teach us how to explain the very difficult concepts to our horses about how we can ride in lightness and ease and sensitivity.  Happy horses, happy riders, happy coaches.

Off to my horses and a great new day!!!

Break is over. Everyone back to work.

Everyone had a well deserved week long break.  They all have come back to work with an “all business” attitude!  They are all doing great, working very hard and learning lots.  Lance is working on fine tuning a great piaffe, Fred is learning about engagement and forward and William is figuring out soft and focus.

As the sun rises so nice and early now, I’ve been getting them all turned out before 6am.  They all get a couple of hours out in their paddocks before their lesson times.  We start riding about 9am.

It’s a bit strange riding in the indoor again after a winter in the California sun.  The footing in the outdoor arenas should be ideal in a very soon and we’ll take the work outdoors.  Here’s hoping the mosquitoes are going to be light this year!

Another great work day today, off to feed the ponies…

Wheww…everybody needs a couple of days off!

This has been an amazing week.  Everyone worked so hard and they are all very, very tired.  Good work = happy, tired horses.

William working in the fog yesterday morning.

A very nice piaffe from a very tired Grand Prix horse...Lance.

Let’s talk about Lindsey’s work this last couple of weeks…in a word, amazing.  She has been working in her stretch zone both physically and mentally and is producing work on all three horses that is heart stopping beautiful.  Thank you Lindsey for all your hard work and dedication to a such a high standard each day.  It is a joy to work with you!

Aleks and Neil are flying in from Phoenix this morning.  We’re going to spend the day together exploring San Diego.  Lindsey has a trip to the gym and tending the horses on her agenda today.  We’ll meet up for dinner somewhere near the beach and watch the sunset over the Pacific.  (That never gets old!!!)

Heading into our last week here…

Shannon and I watching Lance and Linds

Work in hand, Shannon and I on the lines, Lindsey on Lance.

In hand piaffe, Shannon, Lindsey, Vickie and of course Lance!

And into passage...

Fred was a good girl yesterday!

This is for Vicki...Emma and Zidane.

And Emma and Velvet aka Cheezy!!!

Today is rain and wind.  Barb is now officially “camper broke”.  Wind and rain and very loud in the RV!

Off to ride in the covered…

Another morning in the covered…

Oh boy, the horses are looking good!  Everyone is working very hard and it shows.

Lance and Linds in piaffe.

Because of the rain, we’re still in the covered arena (about 30 X 20), lots of us…at one point there were 5 lessons being conducted at once.  Every rider has their own individual headsets attached to a mike on a coach on the outside of the arena.  So it’s a very quiet atmosphere but oh boy that is one busy arena!  Great practice for next weekend’s busy warm up ring.

Linds and Lance in the sunshine in the covered arena.

It was a beautiful, warm, dry night last night so hopefully the dressage court has dried out and we can run through some tests today.  Here’s hopin’…..

A wonderful day ahead and only 4 more sleeps till Ivars arrives!!!!!
