Somatics…teaching day today…

Somatics is neuro-muscular re-education of tight, restricted body parts; using small, slow movements. By moving in small, mindful movements, the brain becomes re-educated and the movement pattern can then be controlled and areas can then be released. Somatic education helps relieve poorly functioning muscle patterns brought on from over work, injuries, stress, aging, etc. Improving the function to targeted areas brings a greater range of motion that translates into more functionality in all aspects of daily life. Better yoga, better cycling, better riding…better life!

You can’t stretch a muscle by pulling on it! Somatics is the way to lengthen and release tight body parts!!!

My somatics week continues today with teaching. This week of Gentle Somatic Yoga is really a Somatic lab. There are so many amazing teachers attending this week and we are being led by an outstandingly thoughtful, mindful leader James Knight. James is leading this group of voracious learners into the world of somatics by exploring the principals, the theory and the movements. And then, in our teaching sessions, continuing the exploration and making them our own.

So today is my teaching day and I think I’m ready… ❤

Off to day 5 of Gentle Somatic Yoga…thank you fellow GSY participants and thank you James Knight…namaste.

The rewards of travel..

Ivars ferry

  • The new sights!!!  We spent the day driving, aboard 2 ferries and then 18 hours later, arrived on a unique and deliciously interesting island.  (On the first ferry to Victoria , they stopped the ferry to do a “man overboard” drill…looked like everything worked…)

Fulford harbour

Salt Spring Island, Fulford Harbour landing

  • The time spent together…travel is partially down time. It’s catch up, discuss future plans and just be…together. Lives get so busy; travel time is deliciously lovely…(Driving the RV in the very strong wind yesterday really felt like I had the 4 horse hitched again..Fred likes to buck and play in the trailer and I would have sworn she was back there in the RV, tucked away in our kitchen!!)
  • The learn and the do something…combine travel with learning and doing…. ❤ So this trip will be a big learning, doing experience. I have a week of Somatics!!! Ivars is here for a couple of days and we’ll explore the island on our bikes before he flies home.
  • And finally from Proust…”the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new places but in seeing with new eyes”. So this week will be seeing some new places and lots of time being in the same place and seeing it with new eyes.

Off to find my mat and start the day with Somatics on Salt Spring Island!!!

And so the Somatic journey continues…

Tomorrow I leave for a week on Salt Spring Island to complete the first phase of Somatic Yoga Instructor Certification.

Somatics

A week on Salt Spring is going to be tough…HA! (I promise I won’t come back with everything tie dyed and beads in my hair!) But it is going to be a joy to eat my vegan/vegetarian way through the restaurants on the island….yum, interesting vegetarian meals each day…yum, yum!

Somatic exercise has fit the bill on so many levels for us, so I’m off to increase my knowledge base and then bring it back home! We will incorporate Somatics into our CORE weekends for riders as well as Somatic movement classes here at FCS and at Refresh Wellness.

Next Core weekend (Concepts) is Aug 6/7.

Somatics at Refresh, Wednesdays mornings 10:30 (starting again July 13)

Off to organize one last Amma day before I head west…

Well, that was interesting…

After 18 months of very interesting, sometimes quite challenging but really oh so satisfying, we now have our certificates.

Yoga Certificate

But most importantly for me, it has led me to Somatics, Somatic Yoga. Slow, subtle exercises designed to improve brain/body connection, to relax and lengthen tight areas in the body, to align the spine, to improve posture creating a more functional, balanced body in motion.

Somatic Yoga, Wednesday mornings 10:30 at Refresh Wellness.

And “in motion” is the thing that got me. Now to add Somatics to our Core Mechanics Workshops…this is going to be grand!

Next Core Workshop weekend is July 16/17. Core Mechanic Concepts. Contact me or Lindsey for details.

Horses all turned out, off to find my yoga mat and Somatics…

Stretching doesn’t work…

But in order to be the best (rider, cyclist, runner, gardener, fitness enthusiast or all round active, healthy, happy, human) the body should be able to relax and lengthen tight areas regularly.

To be able to counter act the body’s Stretch Reflex, learning about somatic movement helps you retrain your brain to access tight areas and then learn how to length and relax them.

Somatic shoulder

The Stretch Reflex is a wonderful reflex (it enables the body to stand erect) but it sure gets in the way if we need to length a tight hamstring, hip, shoulder etc.

Everything we do in life is reflected in a reflex in the body. Our bodies can become habituated to these effects causing  tight and painful areas. Stretching does not work!!! Pulling on a muscle causes the wonderful Stretch Reflex to activate and thus area reflexively tightens against the pull. Hanna Somatics Education is all about the brain, not the reflex being involved with the release of tight areas.

Somatic Movement Education is where it’s at!!!

Somatic Movement class at Flying Colours tomorrow!

Off to hit my mat and start my day with Somatic Movement…
