Grand Turk

We had an amazing day kayaking in an inner waterway in Grand Turk. The guide was not a biologist by any stretch but he was a young man that knew his island home and loved explaining it to tourists. Held a mangrove jellyfish, several different types of sea urchins, a sea cucumber and many, many conch. A wonderful way to end this amazing 2 week  Caribbean experience!!

Back to the ship for our planned sail away at 5pm.

Pulling away from the dock, next stop Miami.

Today is another “at sea” day.  Pilates class this am, a golf lecture in the morning and afternoon, dinner, then packing.  They pick up our luggage this evening and we’ll see it again tomorrow as we head to the airport.  It’ll require some organization to get out the door in the morning (some things are packed and some are not) and then we head to the airport.  Miami/Toronto/Edmonton and we’re home tomorrow night!!!  Amazing really.

Yesterday “at sea”

Yesterday was a total kickback relax day. Pilates in the am for me and Ivars had a spin class in the fitness centre. We both have good books started on our IPods so spent the day “reading” (listening) to our books and enjoying the sun and sea breezes.

O

Off the stern on our deck, deck 9

O

The view from the bow. This hot tub hasn’t been opened all trip (probably don’t want any “Titanic” re-enactments!!!)

Today we are in Grand Turk (Turks and Caicos). A sea kayak/eco walk trip is planned. Sounds wet and but very warm!!!

Tonight we have a special dinner booked. The chef prepares dinner and the head sommelier pairs special wines to each dish. Ivars will be totally hitting the adventure button on his side of the travel memories for this trip tonight!!!

Off for a leisurely breakfast and a look at Grand Turk.

Friday was ATV day at St Barth’s!!!

Mack and Cali…these photos are definitely for you!!!

We had the greatest tour of this wonderful island, St Barth’s, by ATV. Lots of people get to and fro on this island by quad. An easy way to commute and with narrow roads and short distances, a perfect mode of transport.

This is a beautiful island. Very French, very pretty. We’ll be back.

On to the tender, transport to the island

O

“My goodness, this a good way to spend the morning!!!”

O

This is the most dangerous airport in the world. I think if we re-visit St Barth’s, we take the ferry over.

O

Heading back to drop off the quads.

O

In a bay filled with the most amazing cruising boats, this was the most stunning, unique boat around. The crew launched the smaller boats and took everything for a test drive over the day. The launches were all of very interesting designs as well.

O

The end of another wonderful day.

Today is the excursion that made us choose this cruise. We are in St Maartin. We will board retired America’s Cup sailboats this morning and sail in a (I’m sure!!) well supervised “race” in the warm Caribbean waters!!! Photo ops galore…the sun is shining, the winds are up!!

I’m sooo excited!!!

Yoga at the end of the afternoon

Yesterday was ziplining in St Lucia!!! We were anchored out in the bay and were “tendered in” by these little boats. Each tender held over 100 people plus staff. Fun on the water!!!

O

The tender, practising it’s moves!

O

“All aboard!!!”

O

Getting into our harnesses for ziplining!!!

O

We’re ready!!! (I think I look scared…)

O

2 down…10 to go!

O

We’re havin’ fun!!

O

Last one is the fastest one…so “hang on with both hands please!!!”

Today is St Bart’s and an ATV adventure. (I swear we chose these excursions so that we’d have good photos to show Mack and Cali!!!!)

As of last night, we are now heading north back to Miami so Ivars is enjoying taking photos from the deck of the sunrise. Morning is definately our time of the day and the sunrises this week promise to be spectacular!!!

St Kitts

St Kitts

St Kitts was an interesting day at port.

We were late docking, the last of three cruise ships in port. Ivars and I headed to the very bow of the ship and watched the expert driving skills of the crew as they slid the big ship up to the pier unscathed.

We had booked an excursion on a narrow tracked railway that would circumnavigate the island. Lots of history and scenery. We took a look at the very grey clouds and high winds outside and packed our wind shells along. That was a good move as the rail cars had the best view from the open seating up top. We got very wet a couple of times. It’s a good thing neither one of us is worried at all about hair dos…the wind nor the rain have dictated the style each day so far. (hats are of little help…they get blown away in the gale force gusts!!!)

O

Nesting Egrets. They have adapted their nesting to this very thorny bush to ward off the Mongoose that was imported by the English to get rid of all the snakes

O

On the rail tour, rum punch and pina coladas ordered!!!

O

One of 4 very narrow bridges

O

As the sun sets, we sail out of port to Guadeloupe

Today is Guadeloupe at port at 8am. We really didn’t find an excursion on island that excited us so we’ll spend a quiet day on or near the ship. Pilates Reformer class with Kandice, yoga class with Melanie, a run (I know, I know…me…running!!!) and swing some clubs off the stern of the ship. Might even find the sauna at the end of the day…

So off to a late start today, sitting on the stateroom deck so grateful for this amazing day…now we’re gonna find the promenade deck and a short run…looking forward to a lazy day ahead.

Tomorrow is cycling in St Lucia. Hope the weather is a carbon copy of today…light breezes, sun shining and 27C.

Love to you all,

Vickie and Ivars

Day Three on the Cruise, Second Day At Sea

Day Three of Our Caribbean Cruise

Yesterday was the second day of “At Sea”. (lingo alert…no ports, cruising day and night)

The “At Sea Days” are quite full of lectures and lessons. I got my Pilates Reformer class in the morning and thoroughly enjoyed Kandice Kinsley’s instruction. She is only teaching on the “at sea” days which are too bad. She is very qualified and personable and does a great job. Maybe we can talk the Cruise Director (I’m really getting a handle on the ship speak!!!) into scheduling more reformer classes or a mat class or two with Kandace? Fingers crossed.

Ivars ran 5km around the ship. I started out and hit the wind!! It actually wasn’t too bad running into it, hard but doable, but the run on the port side with the wind behind me…whew, I thought I’d get blown overboard. Guess I could’ve run with my life jacket on, just in case?

O
Golf lecture, on the stern, with Joe Hebert

Two more great lectures with PGA golf instructor Joe Herbert. Great. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to swing a club in the driving cage this week and put into practice some of the concepts.

O
After golf lecture, headed to yoga, tea at the Bistro

We did a wonderful yoga class with Melanie Camp late afternoon. We’ll definitely try to find another class with her this week. The waves were 5-7ft and it was quite windy so balance poses were not going to happen. We worked on the mat a lot rather than standing. Kinda like a yoga massage! Nice.

We were going to sit by the pool early afternoon but it was quite crowded. We are on the starboard side of the boat (the sunny side while headed south) so we had a wonderfully quiet afternoon increasing our vitamin D levels on our stateroom balcony.

We ordered dinner from the Main Dining room and sat on the balcony and relaxed and watched a very lovely sunset over the Caribbean. Next week we’ll catch the rising sun…ahhhh…

O
Sunset over the Caribbean, from our stateroom deck

Wine note…a great Chardonnay Matsuhisa, 2011(Russian River) and a super Pinot Noir, “C” (Crystal Selection) 2010, Santa Lucia Highlands. We ordered them for last night”s meal but they arrived too late. Into the fridge and something to look forward to next meal on the deck!

Today is sea kayaks and snorkeling!

Ivars has a new underwater camera so if it clears up a bit and the sun comes out, should be some great shots ahead!!!

Off to get a bite for Ivars and tea for me then head to Tortola!!!
