Mr. Fat Cheeks strikes again…

You know what it’s like to bite your cheek? Well our favourite Grand Prix horse did it at the last show. We both knew he had done it and luckily, didn’t interfere with the test…thank goodness.

So we had the equine dental vet out last week. There wasn’t much to do, a light float to take care of minor edges. But he had a large (quarter sized) lesion on the inside of his cheek.

And because it’s slightly swollen, it’s likely to be re-bitten. So we’ve ridden in the snaffle since the last show giving his mouth a lot of room and as much time as possible to heal. His noseband is always super loose and we loosened it more.

When I checked him yesterday, the lesion was much improved (about the size of dime) but decided that it was still too likely he would re-bite it with his double bridle in and the test of the Grand Prix CDI ahead.

So we’re staying home instead of riding at the show in San Juan this weekend. This will give his mouth three more weeks to heal before our last California CDI at the end of April. Very hard decision but the right decision.

Lindsey is very disappointed (as you can imagine!!) but she is a competitor, a very good competitor…

Success in life

comes when you simply refuse to give up,

with goals so strong that obstacles, failure and loss

only act as motivation.

So we’ll spend the week riding at Arroyo and cheer on Team Peters from home. Yeah live streaming!!!

Off to fit in an early morning lesson with Shannon… ❤

A very tired, very wonderful Grand Prix horse…

Lance 2 Grand Prix level is very difficult. And this weekend was no different except that the skills and timing that both Lindsey and Lance have developed this spring is quite exceptional. Thank you Shannon Peters!!!

The “Peters” method of dressage is light, expressive and horse empathic. And it’s the way we strive to train and ride every day. Thank you Shannon for sharing.

The Grand Prix on Friday was an 8 place finish (65%) and the Grand Prix Special on Sunday was 6 place (also 65%) with comments from Stephen Clarke of “excellent riding”. So proud of them!

And so thankful for this wonderful Grand Prix horse we have in our lives. Thank you Lance for a wonderful, wonderful weekend.

Big congrats to Steffen Peters on two very wonderful rides. A master class in dressage training every time I have the  opportunity to watch him school and compete. Amazing.

Congrats to Emma Weinert O’Rourke on very good rides on both Velvet (GP) and Zindans (PSG)! Good riding girl!!!

Big congrats to Ehren Volk and Magic. They rocked the Young Riders level! A top horse for Canada!

I’m headed back home; more horses at home, more time to spend with grandkids and there’s spring skiing at Lake Louise as well!

LAX this morning, home by dinner!

LAX this morning, home by dinner!

Off to stand in line for large hot tea before boarding!

Congrats Steffen!

Steffen rode a very relaxed Legolas to the win of the Grand Prix class with 77.5 and he also won the PSG on Bailarino 74.8. Yeah Steffen!

Today is the Freestyle classes at the CDI. It also will be live streamed (California Dreaming Productions). Hopefully for all competitors, there will be no rain today!

Lindsey and Lance warmed up beautifully yesterday! The connection from her leg and seat to her hand was wonderful. Half halts going through, lotsa energy!! The class was in the indoor and when he entered the arena in he backed off just a bit and some of the throughness was just not there. In plain words…”He was a tourist in there!!” No tension or spooking, he just wanted to slow down a bit and take it all in (he’s that kinda of a guy!!).

Such a great ride for Lindsey! She did the best she could to get him to focus and rode, rode, rode! 65%, 8th place. Thank you Shannon! ❤

The last half of this class rode the warmup (it was outdoors) in a deluge. It was coming down in sheets of rain. It didn’t last long but long enough to make the last rides very difficult. Our hearts go out to those competitors who dealt with so very difficult conditions.

We have the day off  from competition today. We’ll school Lance and then head to Arroyo to school the rest of the crew.

Off to a busy day,

The jog followed at 3 and we all passed…yeah!!

Lance Del Mar Dressage Affaire

As they are expecting rain this weekend, the CDI will be held in the indoor arena at Show Park.

Grand Prix class is this afternoon and Lindsey and Lance will be coming down centreline at 2:19. ❤ ❤

Gonna be another wonderful day…Grand Prix today!!!

This sport of ours…ugh…

An educated mind

I know being an FEI judge is a tough gig…I don’t want it. But if you do take it on…being fair is important; being honest and in the moment is important and having the intelligence being able to evaluate complex movements on a graduated scale is vitally important. Changing your judge’s hat to a trainers and using a judge’s booth as a training tool is not important at this level.

Yesterday Lindsey rode her personal best and she and Lance were stellar. She had mistakes in the ones (very uncharacteristic for Lance!) and the marks reflected those mistakes. But the range of final scores from 58% to 65% made me step back.

My horse has a short neck and at times in that test, a shortened neck (they all do at times, check the best tests out). But to try and make a training point to us from the judge’s booth about a having short neck and needing better training, nope…not gonna fly…

We’re back in Alberta today (I think the mountains are calling…).

Listen and learn grasshopper..

Steffen’s words of wisdom text to Shannon this weekend on the use of leg in the test…”less sooner rather than more later“. So great..I think we need to record this somewhere…

Congrats to Ehren and Magic, and Emma an Zindan on great rides yesterday! Blue and red ribbons!!! Yeah! Thanks Shannon!

Yesterday was a light school in the morning for Lindsey and Lance as we had no class on Saturday. And it was great! Cleaned up some more issues in the half halt in “show mode Lance”.

The show grounds will be very quiet today as most of the classes in the CDI ended yesterday and horses have returned home. But the Grand Prix Special is in the morning. Lindsey and Lance go at 9:27.

We will be back on the freeway today ASAP after the presentations as to avoid the Sunday traffic back to San Diego.

Off to find some tea and head to the show grounds…

Yeah Lindsey!!

And thank you Shannon Peters!!! (Shannon has a coaching shadow this weekend as she works her way through her FEI riders…me <3…continuing dressage coaching education. Yeah!!!!)

And yeah Lindsey Stroh!! A stellar ride on a bit of saggy Lance (He’s a bit of a diesel burner in this heat). Good riding girl!!! That definitely was your workout for the day!!

Lance GP2

Lance GP4

Lance GP6

And finally, a well earned shower... <3

And finally, a well earned shower… ❤

Today the Grand Prix classes CDI are the freestyles. CDI rules are that you can only enter two tests, the Grand Prix and either the Freestyle or the Grand Prix Special. We have opted for the Grand Prix Special at this CDI and it is scheduled tomorrow. So today Lance will have a light school in the morning, when it’s cooler and a hand walk later in the day.

Tomorrow’s Grand Prix Special will be in the morning so that will definitely be easier on Lance, weather wise.

A big congrats to Emma Weinert O’Rourke and Zindans…first place ribbon (74%) in the PSG. Another big congrats to Ehren Volk on her first place ribbon on Magic in Young Riders!! Wonderful rides!! Congrats coach Shannon!!! Well done team!!

Ivars got a good ride in on his bike on Griffon Park hills and will be back in the saddle this morning.

Off to find some tea…
