Barefoot. Barefoot? Barefoot!!!!

I have been thinking about this for a long while.  Grand Prix dressage barefoot?  Maybe…

Thank you Shannon Peters for showing us barefoot at Grand Prix is possible.  By Shannon’s example, we were assured we wouldn’t be held back in our quest for excellence at Grand Prix by pulling off their shoes.

A lot of things need to be considered before committing to working a high performance barefoot dressage horse.

So I did a lot of considering…

The biggest factor to think about for us to go barefoot is our farrier.  Dan Sullivan has taken care of my horses feet for as long as I have been riding.  I consider him the best in the business.  Period.  He knows his stuff.  (and if he doesn’t, he researches!!!)

Friday morning I ask,  “So Dan, talk to me about  barefoot” and Dan replies “Your horses have good feet and have always been trimmed well.  Why not go barefoot?  It’s better for the horse”

So Friday we went barefoot.

Lande, Fred and William...shoes, shoes, shoes

Lance, Fred and William…shoes, shoes, shoes

Yesterday’sbarefoot rides were amazing!  Lance and Fred love the new feel in their feet, William was a little apprehensive (he very sensitive!!).  He’ll be better today, I’m sure!

Thank you Shannon, thank you Dan…

Mom and Curtis arrived on Monday afternoon to Oceanside. We had a great supper at Via Italia in Encinitas. Yummy!! They headed up to Laguna Woods to get settled in on Tuesday and it sounds like they have a beautiful place to stay until May. They are back in Oceanside tonight to come to Arroyo tomorrow to see the horses and watch our lessons with Shannon. So as long as all goes well with the camera (& operator), I promise some pictures of the horses and I in action!! Susan and Doug Hughes from Alberta also came for a visit to Arroyo today to watch Lance’s lesson. It was great to see familiar faces from Alberta!!

The horses have been doing spectacular this week. I had to ask Shannon today if Lance’s knees were going to hit his chin in the passage. All I could see was white polos coming up around his nose….Wow!! Can’t wait for Vickie to see her boy go!!  It has been very windy here in California this week (I’m not complaining!!), so we have a had a few days of great training opportunities leading up to the show with the horses being a bit tense and hot. I hear there is going to be 3400 jumper horses at Thermal next weekend, so we need all the training opportunities we can get.

Wish us luck navigating around the 3400 horses, riders, grooms, spectators, scooters, golf carts and dogs!! Vickie says “At least they’ll be broke after Thermal….”

Lovely days…

These last couple of days have been so amazing.  We gotten so much done around the farm and everything is headed in the right direction; ready for the spring weather and summer fun!

The weather really has felt like San Diego in Feb/March.  Temps here are the same but the sun is a little hotter in California.  It is really nice to have Alberta  long days and twilight.  Who knew we would homesick for twilight so much!  Later sunsets really extend evening hours here…lovely.

Our horses are going well and love being turned out on the newly sprouting grass in their paddocks.

The outdoor rings are great to ride on but boy do we need rain!  We’re going to have to figure out a watering system for the outdoor rings…”Honey, I have a problem for you to work on!!!”  I’m so glad we have a well stocked hay stack.  I think finding hay is going to be an issue again this year.

We’ve planned a Test Rehearsal Day for Saturday, May 01.  We’ll have the BBQs out for lunch and make a day of it.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we’ll be outside but if not the indoor ring will be great as well.  Mother’s Day weekend we’ll be in Red Deer at the Young Rider’s show…lovely couple of weekends planned.

Pilates with Lindsey will start up very soon.  Dressage Camp is planned for summer…dates to follow.

My house is full of tiny finger prints and grass stains as Mack explores the farm with Grandma and Grandpa…what could be lovelier!!!!

Time to tackle the work on my desk!

Babies Show…a fun day!

Yesterday was too much fun.

The little girls were soo excited to be in their first dressage show.  Their ponies were bathed, brushed and braided.  Mom helped with all the hard stuff including turning, halting and making sure everyone stayed on.  Everyone went home with a ribbon, full tummies and lots of memories.
