8 Things Core Mechanics Workshops are…

8 Things CORE Mechanics for Riders Workshops are…

  1. a 2 day mat/saddle work workshop
  2. Pilates/Yoga/Somatics based
  3. NOT riding lessons
  4. CORE weekends are a way to explore riding concepts on the mat and then take those skills and awarenesses to the saddle
  5. We explore the function of the rider’s core and how best to stabilize it on a moving object. The more stable your core is while riding, the more independent your aids can function.
  6. The movement patterns we work with are not physically difficult. The difficulty is in the body awareness in the movement patterns and then keeping the same mindfulness while applying it in the saddle. Brain/body work!!!
  7. You will explore exercises on the mat that you will be able to incorporate into your regular workout regime when you return home.
  8. CORE workshops are based at Flying Colours Stables but the format is very mobile. All you’ll need is 6 riders, their horses and yoga mats!

Contact Lindsey or Vickie to check on availability of rider spots in workshops at Flying Colours or to arrange for a CORE workshop at your stable. (CORE Concepts workshops are for first time participants; CORE Explorations workshops are for returning CORE riders)

Somatics…teaching day today…

Somatics is neuro-muscular re-education of tight, restricted body parts; using small, slow movements. By moving in small, mindful movements, the brain becomes re-educated and the movement pattern can then be controlled and areas can then be released. Somatic education helps relieve poorly functioning muscle patterns brought on from over work, injuries, stress, aging, etc. Improving the function to targeted areas brings a greater range of motion that translates into more functionality in all aspects of daily life. Better yoga, better cycling, better riding…better life!

You can’t stretch a muscle by pulling on it! Somatics is the way to lengthen and release tight body parts!!!

My somatics week continues today with teaching. This week of Gentle Somatic Yoga is really a Somatic lab. There are so many amazing teachers attending this week and we are being led by an outstandingly thoughtful, mindful leader James Knight. James is leading this group of voracious learners into the world of somatics by exploring the principals, the theory and the movements. And then, in our teaching sessions, continuing the exploration and making them our own.

So today is my teaching day and I think I’m ready… ❤

Off to day 5 of Gentle Somatic Yoga…thank you fellow GSY participants and thank you James Knight…namaste.

Salt Spring touring day…

We spent the day touring around the island.

Forest

Checked out the Studio tour…visited some amazing artists and viewed their art. Sculptures, pottery and even some imported French fabric sewn into pillows, napkins and tablecloths…beautiful.

Got some inside info on which beach had the best walk, where to get amazing French pastries were to be had and where the locals go to get their locally smoked, smoked salmon.

We got the skinny on where the locals grocery shop…it was a wonderful grocery store and we stocked up veggies and stuff for the week.

Got the news that the only laundromat in town closed a short while ago. (might be a problem for me this week!!!) Seems there is a cultural change going on here on the island. There are a lot of homes and land being bought by wealthy purchasers and the old local flavour of the stereotypical hippie, back to the earth, young families are being phased out. It’s a little more like being in the Napa Valley than rural BC.

I think my truck is the biggest (except for a couple of garbage trucks) and the only 1 ton truck here. It is a bit strange lumbering around in the GMC on these skinny, twisting roads but it was perfect to put it into 4 X 4, to climb to the top of Maxwell Mountain and watch the sunset. Amazing. On the climb up, I felt like I was in the middle of an Emily Carr painting…stunning.

Emily Carr forest

Time to fire up the big truck…today is registration for my Somatics course and Canada celebrations on Salt Spring Island…gonna be a great day!

The rewards of travel..

Ivars ferry

  • The new sights!!!  We spent the day driving, aboard 2 ferries and then 18 hours later, arrived on a unique and deliciously interesting island.  (On the first ferry to Victoria , they stopped the ferry to do a “man overboard” drill…looked like everything worked…)

Fulford harbour

Salt Spring Island, Fulford Harbour landing

  • The time spent together…travel is partially down time. It’s catch up, discuss future plans and just be…together. Lives get so busy; travel time is deliciously lovely…(Driving the RV in the very strong wind yesterday really felt like I had the 4 horse hitched again..Fred likes to buck and play in the trailer and I would have sworn she was back there in the RV, tucked away in our kitchen!!)
  • The learn and the do something…combine travel with learning and doing…. ❤ So this trip will be a big learning, doing experience. I have a week of Somatics!!! Ivars is here for a couple of days and we’ll explore the island on our bikes before he flies home.
  • And finally from Proust…”the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new places but in seeing with new eyes”. So this week will be seeing some new places and lots of time being in the same place and seeing it with new eyes.

Off to find my mat and start the day with Somatics on Salt Spring Island!!!

And so the Somatic journey continues…

Tomorrow I leave for a week on Salt Spring Island to complete the first phase of Somatic Yoga Instructor Certification.

Somatics

A week on Salt Spring is going to be tough…HA! (I promise I won’t come back with everything tie dyed and beads in my hair!) But it is going to be a joy to eat my vegan/vegetarian way through the restaurants on the island….yum, interesting vegetarian meals each day…yum, yum!

Somatic exercise has fit the bill on so many levels for us, so I’m off to increase my knowledge base and then bring it back home! We will incorporate Somatics into our CORE weekends for riders as well as Somatic movement classes here at FCS and at Refresh Wellness.

Next Core weekend (Concepts) is Aug 6/7.

Somatics at Refresh, Wednesdays mornings 10:30 (starting again July 13)

Off to organize one last Amma day before I head west…

Maybe this is the real question?…

Real food

Maybe this is also the real question we should be asking about feeding our horses as well?

I missed this question when I changed my stable to whole, organic grain several years ago. I did it because I felt I needed to find more answers to the issue of irritated gut, not enough “good” energy while working and ultimately…keeping equine athletes happy and fit for long careers.

So I bit the bullet and switched to certified organic grain. (I had already switched to organic hay previously).

genesis_with_hands.0120810_std

The results have been awesome. I could go on for pages…less gut irritation, more muscle building with the same effort, amazing coats, very good working energy, etc…

And the big surprise…overall about the same grain costs!!! As we did the gradual grain change over, I noticed I did not need to feed the same amount of organic feed as processed feed. Better muscle, better energy, better training, less feed with organic. 🙂 So my feed costs have stayed about the same for my whole stable from processed feed to organic. 🙂 🙂 🙂

We stock Genesis Certified Organic Feed here at Flying Colours. It is also available at County Living in Okotoks and if Edmonton horse owners would like it available…G and E Pharmacy will bring it in to the store, if you request!!!

So drop into G&E and ask for Genesis!!! Or drop by the stable and ask us about Genesis! ❤

Off to find my yoga mat…OMG I’m a vegetarian, yoga doing, organic eating, animal trainer…I guess I am the “Organic Lady”!!! ❤

Well, that was interesting…

After 18 months of very interesting, sometimes quite challenging but really oh so satisfying, we now have our certificates.

Yoga Certificate

But most importantly for me, it has led me to Somatics, Somatic Yoga. Slow, subtle exercises designed to improve brain/body connection, to relax and lengthen tight areas in the body, to align the spine, to improve posture creating a more functional, balanced body in motion.

Somatic Yoga, Wednesday mornings 10:30 at Refresh Wellness.

And “in motion” is the thing that got me. Now to add Somatics to our Core Mechanics Workshops…this is going to be grand!

Next Core Workshop weekend is July 16/17. Core Mechanic Concepts. Contact me or Lindsey for details.

Horses all turned out, off to find my yoga mat and Somatics…
