The packing is almost finished…

“I don’t know how to say goodbye. Words are stupid. They say so little.   They open up holes you could fall into and never climb out of again.”
 Ann Rinaldi

The house is almost packed up, the horse trailer is almost packed up and our hearts and minds are almost on the road and headed north.

Ivars and I fly home this morning.  We are driving to LA and will drop off the rental car and fly direct to Edmonton this afternoon.

Lindsey and Peter will leave with the horses tomorrow morning.

This has been the most incredable two months.

So it is with many mixed emotions we finish our packing.

Waaaait, waaait, waait…

“Almost there; not quite ready.”

So we’ll wait to step back into the Grand Prix ring.

We had a lesson with Shannon in the warm up ring yesterday and made the decision to scratch the test for this morning.  Close but not there yet.

We took him back to Arroyo last night and will give him Saturday and Sunday off.   We’ll then have Monday and Tuesday to school with Shannon before the trip home.  Better to have 2 more good lessons with Shannon than one mediocre test Saturday and a too tired horse for lessons next week.

Peter and Ivars had a short ride on the bikes yesterday and have a long cycle planned for today.  Lindsey and I will be at Arroyo early this morning to deal with the horses before heading to a “Cardio” Pilates class. Then we’re back to the beach house to get ready to attend Ravel’s retirement celebration tonight at the show at the Fairgrounds.  I’m sure there won’t be a dry eye anywhere in the crowds of Ravel fans tonight.  A great horse, a great rider and great results.

Off to Arroyo…

It’s Friday!!!

Yesterday, after feeding Lance at the show grounds, we were at Arroyo to ride Fred and William.  They were both superstars!  Lindsey knocked it outta the park and rode so effectively on both horses.  Wonderful work.  We were back at the show for the late morning classes and had a lesson on Lance with Shannon.  Today will be the same schedule.

We made a team decision not to show Lance in Friday morning’s Grand Prix class.  The work is not quite “show ready”…almost, so close, but not quite there yet.  He’s being a sweetheart and trying his best but asking him to work all the GP movements at this quality is just going to take a little more time.  After today’s lesson we’ll make a decision about tomorrow’s class.  He’s that close….

Peter had a work day in LA yesterday.  He got back early enough to get a short ride on the bike.  Ivars arrives today!!!  Peter will pick him up from the airport and then they’ll head to Nytro to pick up Ivars’ rental bike.  Then back to the beach house to change and mount up for a ride on the 101 Coast Hwy.  The weekend weather forecast is for warm, sunny weather…they’re going to have a great time on the bikes!!!  (We’re going to a Pilates class while they’re riding!!)

Another amazing day ahead…and Ivars arrives today!!!!!

Wow.

One word.  Wow.

Yesterday was the very best day in my riding/coaching career.  Wow.  Things are coming together at so many levels.

So many people to thank…

to Shannon Peters; your generous, clear instruction from your incredibly vast experience of horses…dressage horses…Grand Prix dressage horses made yesterday possible,

to Lindsey Stroh; your tenacity to figure out the answers to the many questions put to you by Shannon and I and Lance; your committment and dedication to the journey we find ourselves on and your passion for the sport of dressage made yesterday possible,

and to Lance…Lance being Grand Prix Lance is the most glorious, warm, happy dressage horse in the world…Grand Prix dressage horse; Lance being Lance made yesterday possible.

I am so blessed…thank you.

So much to do, so little time…

We are trying to cram as much learning as we can into each day…

Our horses are going well.  The work we set out to tackle this spring, with Shannon’s help, is perfectly online and coming along beautifully.  All three horses couldn’t have learned faster, developed quicker or be happier than they have been this spring.  And Lindsey…well she has been superwoman…learned so much, applied it so well and maintained a balance in her life in our intense spring training 2 months.

We are, as usual, working hard in each lesson daily with Shannon but we are also spending time discussing the plans for our summer and fall work at home.  We feel ready and confident to take on the move to the next level and really are a bit excited to head home and get at it.  Thank you Shannon, thank you so much.

It was the kids last day night with us so we walked to Jake’s for dinner.  We had a great dinner and the kids caught the sunset on the way home.  (they look just fine after their Floatation Spa experience!)  They head north tomorrow with the little car.  They should be back in Alberta for Mack’s 4th birthday next week.

Lance leaves for the show today and Fred and William will stay at Arroyo.  We’ll ride Lance at the show grounds each day and work Fred and William at Arroyo.  Arroyo is only about 15 minutes away from the show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds so riding all three at two different venues is quite doable.

Big day around here today…Peter is here this afternoon!  He has rented a bike from Nytro and the weather for the week looks great.  Lots of cycling time ahead!

Off to an early start…gonna be a great day!!!

Last week at Arroyo

It was a busy day at the barn yesterday, everyone getting ready for the Del Mar show.  Lots of lessons, lots of planning and packing.

Steffen arrived home to a great round of applause as he walked into the stable.  Congrats Steffen, well done!!!!  Betty was leaping and bouncing…her Steffen was home!

Betty...waiting for Steffen...

Betty…waiting for Steffen…

While we were busy at the stable, the truck was getting a check up and ready for the trip home.  One new glo plug and the exhast fluid topped up and the truck is ready for the big trek back home!  Thanks Emma and Hanna for the lift to the Ranch!!

We left the Greg and Phaedra at home to plan their day.  Surfing and more practicing hill starts in the car were on the list.  They got both accomplished and had a blast.

Surf boards in the yard

Phaedra got a bit of a sunburn…ahhh, silly Canadians….

Our surfer girl (she'll be tanned today...)

Today is Greg and Phaedra’s last day here in San Diego and they are going to hit the beach again this morning and then head to downtown San Diego for the afternoon.  They both have sessions booked at Float Spa San Diego (sensory deprivation tanks).  I’m sure they’ll have lots to talk about at dinner tonight…or they both might be so relaxed out they’ll be asleep before sunset?  The full Southern California experience for both of them today!!!!!

For us the day is again, horses…more horses!  Lance and Fred will have lessons with Shannon, William will have a light work day.  At the end of the day we are going to set up Lance’s stall at the show grounds and hopefully get in a Reformer class at Club Pilates.

Peter arrives tomorrow and Ivars on Friday 🙂 🙂 :).

Off to another wonderful day at Arroyo!

Kids, dogs and horses…and oh yeah…the zoo!

We had a great weekend.

Aleks and Neil were here this weekend  with Rosie and Sam.  Everyone loves the beach.  Or should I say, someone really LOVES the beach.  Rosie sat at the door each morning waiting for some human to take her to the beach…”Now???…Please????”.

Greg and Phaedra flew in on Friday and we all enjoyed a wonderful day at the zoo on Saturday.  The San Diego Zoo must see in Southern California.  We’ve done it a couple of ways; first, with strollers and babies.  Strollers and babies involves a lot of running and climbing and “Oh yeah…there’s a monkey”.  No babies this time, just adult kids.  So this time we booked a zoo tour.  The zoo has several themed tours and are sooo worth the time and money.  The tour is a personalized drive around the zoo with a zoo keeper.  It includes lots of inside information about the history of the zoo and the animals and we missed most of the line ups for the popular exhibits.  So interesting, so enjoyable.  It put a smile on the faces of our two family biologists for sure!

San Diego Zoo, Saturday

San Diego Zoo, Saturday

Aleks and Neil and the dogs left yesterday.  They stopped at Arroyo on their way out-of-town and got a tour of the farm and watched Lindsey ride William.  William is definitely our “family” stallion.  He was born and raised at Flying Colours and the kids all remember what a cute foal he was.  So getting to watch him as he grow up is part of our family story for sure!  Aleks, Neil and the dogs were all back in Scottsdale for dinner on Sunday.

Greg and Phaedra have now officially taken over the keys of the little car.  Now they have to practice “hill starts” on a standard transmission and listening to the GPS as they negotiate big city traffic.  They’ll have it down pat by the time they head north on Wednesday. (Phaedra’s coaching Greg as her car at home is a standard 🙂 ) They have a wonderful itinerary planned for their trip home; hiking, museums, wine tasting and lots and lots of beautiful vistas.  It sounds like a great way to start the summer!

Lindsey and I are gearing up for the Del Mar show this weekend.  Lance is entered in this show at Grand Prix and he’s almost ready to really turn it on.  We’ll take him to the show grounds and test out the buttons on the turbo chargers.  He’s soooo close!!!!

Peter arrives on Wednesday and Ivars flies in on Friday.  We are both so excited to see our guys but have hit the reality of the end of our journey and that we are heading home in a week.

This is our 4th year here and it has been the best time ever.  At so many levels.  The beach house, the family, the friends; but most importantly…the work.  With Shannon’s expert eye on the ground, so many things have clicked into place with Lindsey’s riding and now the results are materializing in each horse.  And with Shannon’s wise and clear instruction to me, she has given me so much more insight into the basics of the work.  So exciting.  Thank you Shannon.  Thank you.

And finally for this morning’s thoughts…

A huge congrats to Steffen Peters and Legolas; 2nd place in Hagen Germany; Grand Prix Freestyle at the Horses & Dreams CDI4*. 79.500%!!!! (1st place, 79.575!) Whoo hoo!!!! Yeah Steffen!!!!  The same marks and better from California, to Florida to Germany!!!  Steffen you are the man!!!!

Now, off to Arroyo, Laaaaance, there’s a show this weekend!!!
